The 8 states with a public alligator season, their 2026 hunting periods, and how you get a tag. Most tags come from a summer draw, so watch for application windows in late spring.

Southeast: Aug 8–Sep 7
Southwest, Coastal, West Central, Lake Eufaula: Aug 13–16, Aug 20–23, Sep 10–13
Hunts run sunset to sunrise. Dates follow Alabama's weekday rule.
Random draw by area. Register online in June–July; drawn hunters get a permit.
Agency Arkansas
Open zones: Sep 18–21 & Sep 25–28
Public-land hunts by drawn permit (apply in July). Private land is a zone-quota hunt with a permit.
Agency Florida
Assigned week: Aug 15–Sep 11 (four periods)
Open period, all permit holders: Sep 12–Nov 1
Statewide harvest permits by random draw in May–June phases, then leftovers first-come.
Agency Georgia
Quota hunt, open zones: Aug 14–Oct 5
Quota drawing. Apply online June 1–July 15; selected hunters buy a harvest permit.
Agency Louisiana
Recreational lottery (Zones A–H): Oct 1–31
Commercial, East zone: Aug 26–Dec 31
Commercial, West zone: Sep 2–Dec 31
The recreational season is new for 2026.
Recreational: residents drawn by lottery, 2 tags per zone. Commercial: licensed hunters on qualifying wetlands.

Public waters: Aug 28–Sep 7
Private lands: Aug 28–Sep 21
Public waters: free zone draw for residents. Private lands: landowner permits.
Agency South Carolina
Public lands draw hunt: Sep 12–Oct 10
Private Lands Alligator Program: Sep 1, 2026–May 31, 2027
Public lottery: apply June 1–July 15. Private lands: landowner program.
Agency Texas
Core counties: Sep 10–30
Non-core counties: Apr 1–Jun 30, 2027
Core counties: hide tags issued to landowners after a TPWD inspection. Non-core: hunter tags.
