Sandhill cranes (Antigone canadensis) are gray with a red forehead patch and are legal to hunt in open states. Whooping cranes (Grus americana) are endangered and federally protected — taking one is a serious federal offense. Whooping cranes are entirely white with black wingtips and are taller than sandhills. USFWS estimated around 540 whooping cranes in the primary survey area of the flock that winters on the Texas coast in 2025–26, plus 52 more birds seen outside that area.
