Montana's ran May 1–June 1; Idaho's first period May 1–June 5; Utah's June 30–July 14, 2026; Delaware's applications had to be received by 4:00 p.m. on Aug. 14, 2026; North Dakota's deadline was Aug. 19; and Virginia's was Sept. 25, 2026. Alaska's registration permits became available July 2 with no draw. Utah also requires hunters to complete an annual swan orientation course before applying. What is the difference between a tundra swan and a trumpeter swan?

Tundra swans (Cygnus columbianus) are migratory, breeding on Arctic tundra, and often show a small yellow spot at the base of the bill. Trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator) are larger, with an entirely black bill. Rules on trumpeters differ by state: Utah's guidebook says taking trumpeter swans is illegal in Utah, Delaware's trumpeter swan season is closed, and Alaska closes trumpeter swans statewide. In Utah and Nevada, the federal memorandum requires the swan season to end once 20 (Utah) or 10 (Nevada) trumpeter swans are reported taken. The Montana, North Dakota, Idaho, and Nevada regulations we read describe a 'swan' permit without restricting it to tundra swans — read your own state's rules.
